Jimmy Han, owner and founder of Beer Belly in Koreatown, Los Angeles, brought craftbeer into a place yet seen. When people think of microbrew, they don’t think of his town, so why not change that? Jimmy and I had a great talk about beer, the stresses of running the gastropub and also its perks. “But most importantly,” Jimmy said, “doing whatever it takes to make people happy is the only thing that matters.”

That claim is everything but cliché at Beer Belly. Jimmy takes his customers seriously and makes it a full time job to get to know them, make small talk and be physically present at his establishment. Growth at Beer Belly means something like what you’d expect when you arrive at your good friend’s house for dinner––conversation, opinions and good small talk. Yes, Beer Belly has a great presence on social media and can be found in all the typical haunts. Yes, you can democratically choose the music that Beer Belly plays over a WiFi jukebox queue open to the public. But no, it is not glitz and glamour that make Beer Belly worth coming to. The gastropub is 50 yards away from Western Avenue, down an alley and covered in graffiti––everyone is there with intention.

I hope you enjoy the quick insight into his place and consider stopping by this gem next time you’re in LA. The food alone is worth it …not to mention the beers and overall vibe. More likely than not, there’s a good chance Jimmy will be there to shake your hand and pour you a taster of the latest beer he’s wrangled in on tap. You can immediately tell that people are there to relax, be happy, and drink great local beer. This is old-world hospitality in a new world setting. Try finding that somewhere else.
